Classes

Beginning Knitting and Crochet: Beginning classes for knitting and crochet are scheduled one-on-one at your convenience during business hours. You may schedule lessons just for yourself, or for yourself and a few other friends. In beginning knitting, you will learn your stitches while you create a beautiful chunky yarn scarf. At the end of your mastery period, you'll have a fabulous accent you can actually use!

Classes a la carte: If you weren't able to attend a specific class, or you missed out entirely on one, here's your chance! Simply schedule the class topic of your choice at the time that's convenient for you.

How Much Do Classes Cost? At Vermilion Bay Yarn, we're all about getting you moving on your fiber projects and getting you going with new techniques. All classes (including beginning knitting and crochet) at VBYC are $20 plus materials. You do not pay each time you come in to continue the same class.

Knitting Parties at VBYC: Gather together 10 of your friends or colleagues and set a date/time for a knitting party at Vermilion Bay Yarn! Beginners and seasoned knitters can participate in the same party! Folks who've never knitted before will learn how and the experienced knitters work their own fun project! Contact the shop for details!

Our Return Policy

Now and then we purchase a bit too much, or decide that a different yarn might be better for a project than the one we selected. Here's how VBYC accomodates merchandise returns. This policy is also clearly displayed in the shop by the register. Thank you for your business!

Merchandise purchased at The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company may be exchanged/returned for shop credit only. No cash refunds. No exhanges/returns on special orders. Gift Certificates may not be redeemed for cash. Yarn presented for exchange must be odor-free and in new condition with the yarn band intact. Yarns wound into skeins are not accepted for exchange.

Knitting Rescue and Project Help

We are most willing to assist YOU, our customers, with quick help or to fix minor blemishes in your fiber work at no charge. As I see it, that's all part of what YOUR local yarn shop is about, especially if your project originated from VBYC. If you find yourself in need of frequent coaching on a particularly challenging project, or if you require detailed assistance with a project obtained elsewhere, we encourage you to make that project into a class ($20 fee applies) for the duration of your work.

WWKIP Day With Pictures

Saturday, June 13 was WWKIP Day: Worldwide Knit in Public Day. A healthy group of us celebrated the day with a traditional South Louisiana get-together at Girard Park in Lafayette. The weather behaved splendidly for us. Unlike the scorching temps we're enduring now, the gods were smiling on us in early June and treated us to a rather mild summer day with plenty of sunshine and comforting, cool breezes all day long. We set up our chairs, knitting bags and the picnic buffet and hung signs around the park to "advertise" our presence there. We were not without the curious taking a look at what we were up to -- but that's why we were there: to knit in a public place. More than just knitting out in the open, we enjoyed each other's company the Acadiana way, starting off the morning with fresh cracklins and boudin from Johnson's. What a tasty treat! The WWKIP participants brought their own picnic sides to share as well as something for the grill. Unfortunately, Chris Burleigh, our designated grill master was unable to attend that morning, which meant the job fell to me. No meat was burned on the grill, and there was plenty for everyone! To keep us even cooler, we enjoyed 4 gallons of Frozen Sun daquiris. Now if that's not Louisiana, I don't know what is! The day started off around 9:15 or so to stake out our territory and to assemble the grill. By 10:30, folks started arriving, some staying all day long, some just for an hour or so. And of course no knitting event is complete without the customary prize drawing. The lucky winner received a blue silk Della Q project pouch, a jaunty pair of scissors, a skein of Lamb's Pride, needles, and a little instruction book with small projects. Ann Cornell was the lucky winner!
WWKIP day is only one day of the year when we change our venue to knit together in some other place. At Vermilion Bay Yarn, we are so lucky that we always have a place to come together to share in the company of fellow fiber fans. Throughout the day, anyone may come sit and work on their projects. Twice a week, we have Knit Cafe from 6pm-8pm. Those of us who can't be there during the day, are welcomed to take part in these evening times on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our gatherings are made up of folks of all ages, men and women. Our individual interests vary, our projects vary. Some knit, some crochet. Some people have worked with fiber all their lives, some have just started. It's a chance to stay in touch with our friends, see what everyone has been up to, and what everyone is working on. If you haven't been to the shop just to sit and visit, or to Knit Cafe, give it a try. Join our community! Everyone fits in at VBYC!

WW Knit in Public!

Saturday was great fun in Girard Park. The pictures are still in the camera, but I will post them in a bit. We had a traditional South Louisiana get-together, starting off with fresh boudin, cracklin's, and sipping daquiris through the day. I got to the park pavillion around 9:15 to stake out our territory, hang signs, and assemble the grill. As more and more folks arrived, our groaning board grew bigger and bigger with picnic goodies and tasty items for the grill. Sausages were by far the day's favorites from hotdogs to traditional German Bratwurst. Our large shelter provided wonderful shade from the sun, and we were thankful for the constant breeze through the day that kept us quite comfortable in our outdoor setting. It was quite a pleasant picnic day of eating, visiting and knitting. Stay tuned for the pictures!

Can I Shop at VBYC on June 13th?

Some of y'all have asked and called whether the shop will be open on WWKIP day, June 13th. The answer: Yes! The shop will be open from 10am-4pm as usual, and Heloise will be joining us in the park after the shop closes. So, if you need a needle, yarn, or whatever for your project before heading over to Girard, stop in! If you find that you're at the park and may need something in particular, we can phone it in and you'll have it after 4, or we can zip over and pick it up for you!

Check out our Links

On the left column of the blog, there is a list of website links of intererst to us all at Vermilion Bay. They are mostly links to our favorite yarns, magazines, and supplies. I've just added a new one that will take you to the Leipziger Kreativ- und Strickcafe, the wonderful yarn shop in Leipzig from which we have borrowed the name of our Tuesday and Thursday get-togethers: Knit Cafe. For obvious reasons, the site is in German, but there are loads of pictures that need no words and make complete sense to fiber fans. Especially recognizable is the WORLDWIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY logo on their site. The Strickcafe group have, like we, chosen a public site to do their public knitting. They'll be on the steps of the Leipzig Opera House this Saturday. We will be, as many of you know, at Girard Park in Lafayette this Saturday, June 13 from 10am. Do indeed bring a lawn chair, something for the potluck, and your projects! Folks will be joining us throughout the day, some will come for the whole day. However much time will fit into your Saturday schedules, please stop by and do a little knitting, visiting, and eating!
