Classes

Beginning Knitting and Crochet: Beginning classes for knitting and crochet are scheduled one-on-one at your convenience during business hours. You may schedule lessons just for yourself, or for yourself and a few other friends. In beginning knitting, you will learn your stitches while you create a beautiful chunky yarn scarf. At the end of your mastery period, you'll have a fabulous accent you can actually use!

Classes a la carte: If you weren't able to attend a specific class, or you missed out entirely on one, here's your chance! Simply schedule the class topic of your choice at the time that's convenient for you.

How Much Do Classes Cost? At Vermilion Bay Yarn, we're all about getting you moving on your fiber projects and getting you going with new techniques. All classes (including beginning knitting and crochet) at VBYC are $20 plus materials. You do not pay each time you come in to continue the same class.

What's Available At Vermilion Bay

The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company is your local source for the fine yarns of Rowan, Classic Elite, South West Trading, Cascade, Plymouth, Schaefer, Malabrigo, Muench, GGH, Brown Sheep, Lana Grossa, Tilli Tomas, Universal, and many others! We offer high quality needles and hooks from Addi, Chiaogoo, Hiya-Hiya, and Brittany. Vermilion Bay Yarn (YOUR local yarn shop) is YOUR one stop for all your knitting and crochet notion needs: counters, holders, markers, darning eggs, tapestry needles, etc.

Knit Cafe: The Evening Fiber Art Group meets on Tuesdays from 6pm-8pm at the shop. Bring your project(s) and sit for as long as you like. Food, coffee, and soft drinks are always provided, and everyone is encouraged to add to the buffet.

Need something repaired? Favorite sweater with moth holes? Heirloom lace with a snag? Bring it in for an estimate.

Don't have time to knit or crochet it? The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company is your only local custom fiber art source! Please visit the shop for an estimate.

Knitting Parties at VBYC: Gather together 10 of your friends or colleagues and set a date/time for a knitting party at Vermilion Bay Yarn! Beginners and seasoned knitters can participate in the same party! Folks who've never knitted before will learn how and the experienced knitters work their own fun project! Contact the shop for details!

Our Return Policy

Now and then we purchase a bit too much, or decide that a different yarn might be better for a project than the one we selected. Here's how VBYC accomodates merchandise returns. This policy is also clearly displayed in the shop by the register. Thank you for your business!

Merchandise purchased at The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company may be exchanged/returned for shop credit only. No cash refunds. No exhanges/returns on special orders. Gift Certificates may not be redeemed for cash. Yarn presented for exchange must be odor-free and in new condition with the yarn band intact. Yarns wound into skeins are not accepted for exchange.

Knitting Rescue and Project Help

We are most willing to assist YOU, our customers, with quick help or to fix minor blemishes in your fiber work at no charge. As I see it, that's all part of what YOUR local yarn shop is about, especially if your project originated from VBYC. If you find yourself in need of frequent coaching on a particularly challenging project, or if you require detailed assistance with a project obtained elsewhere, we encourage you to make that project into a class ($20 fee applies) for the duration of your work.

We Got Rhythm....We Got Melody...

Who Could ask for anything more? After a hat-tip to George and Ira Gershwin, it's our pleasure to introduce some new awesome colors of Jojoland Melody, as well as a worsted weight Jojoland yarn new to the shop: Rhythm. Those of you familiar with the popular DK weight Melody, know well that besides its softness, the colorways are quite amazing. Picture the same soft, brilliant yarn, but in a worsted weight, and you got Rhythm! Put on your dancing shoes and listen to the music! But wait, you can ask for more: The latest geometrical pattern gem from Jojo is here too, the "Hidden Squares" wrap you've seen in all the knitting magazines. The pattern is worked in Melody and consists of a series of interlocking mitres. If you liked the Hexagonal Spirals, you'll really love the Hidden Squares. We also stock a number of other Jojoland lace scarf patterns that work well in Melody, as well as in the fabulous Jojoland Cashmere.

Rowan Tapestry!

Varigated splendor! Just arrived in Acadiana: Rowan Tapestry. It's a wool/soybean blend in utterly delicious colors. Is it soft? OH, WHAT! Just wait till you hold a ball of Tapestry. You won't want to set it down. And the shades! Subtle color variations! The yarn knits up on size 6 needles, a flawless light worsted weight yarn for your autumn knits and crochet projects!

Construction in our Neighborhood

Those of us who get to the shop from the south up Verot School Road or who take Ambassador down to Verot and turn left all know what this picture is about. I treated our friendly and helpful stopsign controler yesterday to an earful of "Anything Goes" blaring through my car stereo as I waited for her to flip the sign to "slow", allowing me safe(er) passage between the heavy machinery working to make the drive a wee bit easier. For those of you who may not be familiar construction-free routes to the shop, here are a couple: From Youngsville: Take Milton Avenue to E. Broussard to Kaliste Saloom. Drive straight to Martial. From Ambassador: Turn Left onto Kaliste Saloom Then, turn right onto Martial towards Comeaux High School. Turn right onto Student Drive and drive around the school to Digby. There is a driveway into the Bridge Plaza from Digby: you can actually get to the shop without ever setting a single tire onto Verot School Road. There is also access to Camillia Blvd. from Student Drive via Bluebird (Easy does it on Bluebird: speed vans have been known to lay in wait there, so watch your speed, Mark).

Undulate like a Clapotis!

Clapotis means "ripple" or "lapping water" in French (pronounced "Klah- poh-tee"). It's the brainchild of Paris-based knitting designer Kate Gilbert and has become all the rage recently. The pattern, available at no charge from Knitty.com., has been talked up, talked about, worked up, photographed and lauded on Ravelry and other popular handwork sites. The color variations in the yarn along with the fascinating undulations of the fabric created by dropping stitches give this piece an elegant drape. VBYC knitter Kim Powell recently completed this fine Clapotis wrap from two hanks of Schaefer Laurel. Stop in today and pick up the two hanks you'll need, grab your #8's, and start a Clapotis! What a beautiful, yet cleverly simple project!

It's not easy being....green...

Looks who's back! Your favorite counters, the adorable Mini Katcha-Katchas. We know them locally as "frog counters" because of their shape and their attractive green color. Beside the aesthetic appeal of these little guys, they're extremely helpful to us knitters, since they keep our count and remind us of it after we've hung up the phone, cooked dinner, or answered the door. But besides their being green, you'll save loads of green at Vermilion Bay Yarn when you add one of these to your notions collection. Compare elsewhere at a whopping $11.50. Our everyday VBYC low price is $5.50.

It was a rather large shipment, so there's plenty to go around! Laurel, Elaine, Andrea, Sandra and others, and all with new Ladies! Sherri Lewis, Beatrix Potter, Elizabeth Kuebler-Ross, Barbara McClintock.....and the ever popular Kate the Great (hat tips to Cole Porter). Several of you have been asking for the Crayons colorway. It's here! Ciao means "goodbye", but say hello today to the new colors of Lana Grossa Ciao yarn! It's the super-bulky mega hit in new colors! Ciao is an all-in-one fashion scarf yarn that makes a classy, colorful, thick-thin fabric. Happy Birthday to Jane Hebert, extraordinary knitter, seasoned traveler, and fascinating story teller! Jane stopped in at the shop last week to knit and pose for a photo wearing the VBYC Birthday Tiara! If you're all curious, Jane turned 40 this month.
